1:

Fly
Miri to Bario. Walk 30 min to local lodge for lunch. After
lunch walk to Bario Asal, the oldest longhouse in the
valley, and meet the inhabitants. Dinner and overnight at
local lodge.

2:

Trek
4 hours along a well maintained trail through mossy Kerangas
forest to Pa’ Berang, a Penan settlement. Lunch in Pa’
Berang. Meet the Penan family who will accompany you and
built your jungle camp. Trek for 3 hours through montane and
primary forest. Help your Penan guides to gather jungle
plants and build the camp for the night. Overnight in jungle
camp. (Please note that in the fruiting season the Penan
will not be in Pa’ Berang, but harvesting in the jungle,
and therefore may not be seen.)

Rise
at dawn to the sounds of the jungle and experience a morning
in the life of the Penans - hunting and plant gathering, and
processing the wild palm tree to extract sago, their staple
food. Bid farewell over lunch. Trek 4 hours along a bumpy
trail to Ramudu, a Kelabit Longhouse, crossing Pa’
Ngerurun stream 14 times! Dinner and overnight in the
longhouse.

Trek
into the mythical past of the Kelabits, visiting megaliths
and an ancient burial site. Overnight in the longhouse at
Pa’ Dalih.
Day
5:

Morning
free, swimming in the Kelapang River or exploring the
longhouse & surroundings. After lunch, climb to Raan
Luang ridge, through secondary forest. Enjoy the spectacular
view of Pa’ Dalih. Trek 2 hours through heath forest, to
see orchids, pitcher plants and spot some of the wildlife.
Reach the longhouse at Long Dano. Dinner and overnight at
the longhouse.

Trek
8-9 hours on a well maintained trail, crossing streams and
rivers on bamboo and log bridges, passing through primary,
heath and secondary forests. By-pass the abandoned village
of Pa’ Main and reach Bario in the evening. Dinner and
overnight at a local lodge.

to the airstrip for flight to Miri.

to Pa’ Longan longhouse (4 hours) Along the trail it is
possible to see rhododendrons and orchids (if in season).
The climate is cool as the highlands are about 1000m above
sea level. Overnight at Pa’ Longan.

to Long Rapung jungle shelter on the Dapur River (4-5 hrs).

to the Indonesian village of Pa’ Rupai (6-7 hours).
Overnight in the village.

to the village of Ba’ Kelalan (4 hours). The Lun Bawang
people here share a similar lifestyle to the Kelabits, and
wet padi and buffaloes are important parts of their culture.
Overnight in the Green Valley guest house.

to Ba’ Kelalan airstrip for flight to Lawas then to Miri.

Trek
to Long Rapung (4-5 hours), the site of an old longhouse on a river bank
surrounded by huge bamboo plants. En route it is possible to see rafflesia,
orchids and pitcher plants. Overnight in jungle camp.

Climb
to the summit of Mt. Murud, the highest mountain in Sarawak (2434m, 8-9
hours). This is a very strenuous climb passing from lowland rainforest to
the mossy forest of the summit. Pitcher plants, mosses and orchids abound
at the higher elevations. The climb is along an un-maintained trail using
tree roots and for foot and hand holds. Overnight on the summit ridge,
where temperatures can drop to 6 C.

Rise
early for the sunrise scenery. The peaks of Mt. Mulu and Batu Lawi can be
seen. After breakfast descend to the SIB shelter (4 hrs). Overnight in the
shelter.

Descend
through mossy forest into lowland rainforest. This side of the mountain is
closer to Ba’ Kelalan and after a few hours you will see the fields of
the settlement. Overnight in Ba’ Kelalan guest house.

Walk
to Ba’ Kelalan airstrip for flight to Lawas then to Miri.

To Long Banga (8 Days 7 Nights)

to Bario in the Kelabit Highlands. Orientation and preparation for jungle
trek. Overnight in Longhouse.
Day
2:

Depart
for Long Dano on foot (up to 7 hours). Fairly easy trekking with Penan
guides. Overnight in Kelabit longhouse.
Day
3:

To
Lepor Zync on foot (up to 7 hours). We are now in uninhabited rainforest.
Overnight in a jungle shelter.
Day
4:

To
Pa’ Okan on foot (up to 8 hours). A more rugged but shorter walk with
time to enjoy the forest. (Meals may possibly include hunted game).
Overnight camping in forest.
Day

To
Long Peluan on foot (up to 6 hours). Rugged mountain walk, visiting Penan
Settlement. Overnight in Kelabit longhouse.
Day

To
Long Puak by longboat (3 hours). Exciting river journey, fishing and
picnic. Overnight in Sa’ban longhouse.

Long Banga on foot (1 hour) Day at leisure with the Sa’ban, Kenyah and
Penan tribes. Farewell dinner party and overnight in Kenyah longhouse.
