Travel Tips:

CLIMATE

The dry season in Tioman extends from March to October. The East Coast Monsoon is between November and February when the frequent rains are punctuated by intermittent sunshine. This is the cooler season. Temperatures year-round range from 21°C to 35°C (70°F to 90°F). Water temperatures are always a pleasant 25°C to 28°C.

LANGUAGE

Malay is the native tongue but English is widely spoken on the island.

CURRENCY

The Local currency is Ringgit Malaysia (RM) and it is convertible into most major currencies. Foreign currencies can be converted at banks and money changers on the mainland. Common bank notes are in denominations of 100, 50, 20 and 10 Ringgit. The Malaysian Ringgit is currently pegged to the USD at RM3.80 to 1 USD.

Tourists are free to bring in any amount of foreign currency or travelers cheques. However, tourists would need to seek approval if the amount of foreign currency to be carried abroad exceeds the amount brought into Malaysia and if the amount to be taken out is more than the equivalent of USD2500. Tourists must also obtain permission and declare ringgit exceeding RM1000 being brought into or out of Malaysia. Further details at http://www.customs.gov.my

MONEY

There are currently no ATMs on Tioman. However we accept Visa, Mastercard + Amex. But we do not accept traveller's cheques at JapaMala. If you are planning on travelling outside of our resort it is advisable to change some currency on the mainland.

 

VISA REQUIREMENTS

Visitors to Malaysia must be in possession of a valid passport or travel document with a minimum validity of six months beyond the intended visiting period. Most nationalities do not require visas for social or business visits. For further information, please check with the nearest Malaysian diplomatic mission or Tourism Malaysia office. HEALTH

It is not necessary to take malaria tablets or vaccination for yellow fever, but if you are in doubt, please consult your doctor or family physician.

ELECTRICITY

Our rooms are equipped with 3 square pin contact sockets. However, multiple adaptors are available with round pins and the standard capacity is 220 – 240 volts A C at 50 cycles per second.

TIME

Tioman is +8 hours ahead of GMT and +16 hours ahead of U.S. Pacific Standard Time.

GETTING AROUND

Tioman is a relatively undeveloped island - getting around is done mostly by trekking or by sea taxi. JapaMala Resort has its own boat which is available for hire on an hourly or per day basis.

There is a rough road between Tekek and Juara - on the East side of the Island - local operators will drive you there for approx RM35 one way.
